My Clutter: OCD in Action...
“There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self."
- Aldous Huxley
Ah, yes, the clutter. Even the "desktop" of my computer is extremely cluttered! My third “big goal” for 2010. Funny how cleaning up always seems to get relegated to third place. Or worse.
Aldous Huxley -- neatness counted!
So many icons... so little clue what they all are!
The studio where I do my writing and design. It's been worse. Trust me.
"Workbench?" No work's been done here since 1932! And my garage?!
So much stuff… so little incentive to toss anything. (I’ve always argued that a chaotic mind is a sign of creativity.) But the truth of the matter is, if I really intend to get healthier, and to complete my book this year, then, of necessity, I must set priorities, get organized, and get my workspace under control. It’s that simple. Well, not entirely simple. These cluttering tendencies are a dysfunction of my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Runs in the family. It's the weirdest thing. Some stuff I am so neat about. And some stuff gets so messy. Go figure. (Here's a great website for uncluttering, by the way!)
I know what I’ve got to do. I know I’ve got to do it. And I know it ain’t gonna get done this week, or probably even next week. But it is going to get done soon. That’s a promise.
So, for now, this will be a short page. Here are a couple “before” photos of my studio and my workbench. Someday… soon… sounds like a song lyric “…gonna clean it, someday soon…” Yes. I will get ‘er done! And once I do that, I will proudly post a couple of “after”
photos to prove it. And I’m going to keep it clean after that. Promises.
Promises. We’ll believe it when we see it.
And I may even post a few tips and insights on how I made it happen.
But first things first. Whatever.
Yes, yes, I know. It’s just like a food or drug addiction. I’m addicted to
saving stuff. And, also, I lack the appropriate organizational skills to
keep my stuff neatly stowed. Simpflify! Right? Right! Hey… this is a
pretty clean and simple web page, huh?! That's a start! Go ahead,
goad me on.
UPDATE: May 3, 2010 -- Hey! Check out this photo at the right...
yes, I am making more progress. See? There is clear work space on
my desktops! I'm working on it! Getting organized. Tossing stuff.
And, yes, I know... there's still a long, long way to go. I will do it!
“Things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler.”
